Mandaluyong: An Address of Progress

The name of Mandaluyong has several stories surrounding it, often varying on who is asked. Some historians say that it may have come from came from Manda, the daughter of a tribal chieftain, and Luyong, a Maharlika despised by the former’s father. It was said that Luyong claimed Manda’s hand when he won a series of competitions in the tribe, as dictated by their custom. Manda-luyong, therefore, was the name given to the place where they settled. Other state that the area where Mandaluyong now stands was once home to a significant number of Luyong, a tree from which canes and furniture were made.

Today, Mandaluyong is neither famous for the fable of the two ancient lovers and their colourful past, nor for the abundance of trees along its paths. It now mostly recognized as the concrete jungle it has become, more specifically a centrally located city in Metro Manila teeming with progress in terms of finance, trade, business, and industry.

Where luyong trees might have once stood, skyscrapers owned by the largest corporations in the country have now risen. San Miguel Corporation, for instance, which is considered as one of the biggest, if not the biggest corporation in the country, holds office in Mandaluyong.  Major commercial centers like SM Megamall and EDSA Shangri-La are also located within the city, flanked by numerous office buildings in places like Shaw Blvd. and Boni Ave.

This is not countin the malls built on the lower floors of the various condominium projects within the city, as well as the other shopping malls that are not as sizeable.

Mandaluyong is also home to several of the top schools in Metro Manila and the Philippines overall. Among these are the Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, Jose Rizal University, Rizal Technological University, and Don Bosco Technical College.

Indeed, comprehensive urban living is a reality in Mandaluyong, which makes it one of the most in demand places in the Philippines in terms of residential properties.
