Rent to Own Transactions

A “rent to own” apartment is an alternative and somewhat middle ground to buying and renting. In such an option, the lessee pays a slightly higher-than-market price per month as a down payment for the future purchase of the unit at an agreed sale price. After an agreed-upon period of time, the lessee can decide if he wants to purchase the flat, and he can pay the remainder of the total cost of the unit.

This is an attractive option for some because instead of paying per month with nothing to show for it, “renting to own” enables you to invest slowly in a flat, but without needing to fully commit to it yet. As the lessor in most cases only gives the right and not an obligation to buy, the lessee can walk away from the deal and simply let the contract expire if he decides that the apartment is not for him.
